This page summarizes the timetable and lecture venue changes that are planned for 2012.
Please send comments to Pat Terry as soon as possible. We have to finalize the timetable entry in the printed Calendar very soon now.
This version : 2011/12/12 Changes since first release highlighted in red
As always, changes to times have been kept to a minimum. Many of them arise from the need better to allocate venues to large senior classes such as in Pharmacy and Accounting.
A large number of venue changes are proposed. These are mostly predicated by the crisis in Pharmacy and Accounting where the classes have been outstripping the venues previously allocated. So I have arranged to accommodate Pharmacy 2 in Chem Minor for nearly all classes, Pharmacy 3 in Geography G11 for all classes, and Pharmacy 4 in Economics A for nearly all classes. I have also tried to keep Economics 338 and Economics C as clear as possible to enable them to be used for tutorials, and relocated the BComF program to the Sociology department.
Changes to times and proposed changes to venues are summarized below by department.
Please bear in mind that the pressure on venues is now (in principle) very problematic. Poor lecture attendance "helps" but the fact remains that we are now overbooking venues quite badly in some situations. A study of the allocation tables on the web site will reveal that the bigger venues are very heavily booked, so there is little room for manoeuvre, and in particular the often touted "solution" of "move lectures to the afternoon" might well create more problems than it could ever hope to solve!

Venues remain assigned officially to Botany Major
Ethnomusicology
No changes to lecture times or venues. But something may be wrong. In 2011 Ethnomusicology 2 and 3 were combined in some mysterious way. Does this practice remain?
No changes, but if AHV 1 grows much bigger we shall have a serious problem
French
French 1P venue changed to Economics A
Geography
No changes to lecture times or venues
Geology
No changes to lecture times or venues
German
German Studies 1 venue changed to Psychology Major
Greek
No changes to lecture times or venues

History 2 is way too big for their venue, but this seems to be preferred by the Department.
History 3 now have two better venues for their two streams: Arts Minor and Psycho Minor
Human Kinetics and Ergonomics
No changes to lecture times. All lectures moved back to the HKE block.
Ichthyology
No changes to lecture times or venues
isiXhosa 2nd language
No changes to lecture times or venues
isiXhosa (Mother Tongue) to design their own timetables as before. This is unsatisfactory, however, and a better solution should be found.
Information Systems
No changes to lecture times or venues
Introduction to Science Concepts and Methods
Slight changes in times and venues (split - Drama and Steve Biko room 1 for tuts).
Changed Monday 5+6 lecture to Zoology 02
Journalism

Modern Fiction
Music
No changes to lecture times or venues for Music. Although Music appears on the official timetable it is suspected that they often make ad-hoc changes. Sound Technology is timetabled internally, but this is unsatisfactory. Ethnomusicology 2 and 3 now share a common slot - these courses are offered in alternative years (or are they).
Pharmacy
No changes to lecture and seminar times
Nearly all classes in Pharmacy 2 to be held in Chemistry Minor (173 seats)
All classes in Pharmacy 3 to be held in Geography G11 (114 seats)
Nearly all lectures in Pharmacy 4 to be held in Economics A (118 seats),
except for some Electives which are split between Economics A and Zoo 109
Philosophy
PHI 2 venue changed to Psychology Major (128)
Physics
No changes to lecture times, but we may have to make venue changes if Physics (and other) class sizes change dramatically. Physics 2 and 3 are "greedy" and their extra 6th period lectures may have to move as well to avoid clashes with Maths.
Politics
No changes to lecture times or venues
Numbers in Politics 1 have fluctuated quite widely in recent years. If Politics 1 becomes much larger than can be properly accommodated in one session in Barratt 6 - 7 - 8 - 9. a second slot in 7 - 8 - 9 - 6 - * might have to be introduced, but we shall have to see.
Psychology
No changes to lecture times or venues
Sociology
Sociology 1 venue changed to GLT (both streams)
Sociology 2 venue changed to Arts Major
Statistics
Statistics 101 and 102 now both held in Eden Grove Blue (both streams)
Zoology, Entomology
No changes to lecture times or venues
If classes in Cell Biology/Zoology were to grow bigger we should have severe problems.
Extended Studies Program
Redesign of the BComF 1 timetable. This is a closed shop. Classes moved to Sociology as they no longer fit in Economics 338 and Economics C, and complaints have been received from Economics.
Tutorial times in BAF (1) and BScF (1) programmes changed, along with minor venue changes
Some ISCM classes moved to Steve Biko Room 1
