Grahamstown is a small, but very significant, city, steeped in history, and with a heritage of achievements in the many fine schools and the university which comprise its main "industry". It is located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, about 60 Km (37 miles) inland, and about 120Km (75 miles) from the nearest large town, Port Elizabeth. Rhodes University is a small flourishing university of about 7000 students. I am one of five full professors in a department that boasts thirteen very fine academic staff, eleven support staff, and an ever increasing number of students.
